DNACA presents: Socks in the Frying Pan

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) continues its 35th Performance Series at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday March 14 in Crescent Elk Auditorium at 994 G St with the Irish folk band Socks in the Frying Pan. The trio are touring from County Clare on the west coast of Ireland, which is commonly known as the universal hub of Irish traditional music.

The group charms audiences worldwide with their virtuosic musical ability, dynamic vocal harmonies, and onstage wit. Complete with a guitar, banjo, fiddle, and accordion they present classic Celtic melodies infused with their own personal flair. Their live shows are energetic and truly a unique form of entertainment.

The band consists of three talented musicians. Aodán Coyne comes from a family rich in musical history, with his grandfather Eamon and father Mick both being well-respected traditional Irish musicians. He began playing guitar at age fifteen and won a number of acoustic competitions. He began focusing more on traditional Irish music and alternate guitar tunings while continuing his musical education at Dundalk Institute of Technology, qualifying for his BA in Applied Music. He has performed in a number of prestigious venues worldwide both as a soloist and in various bands including: The Music Academy of Paris, the University of Cambridge, and the president of Ireland residence. He teaches guitar and is a founding member and President of the Dundalk Music Society.

Shane Hayes was born and raised in Ennis County Clare, soaking up the traditional music centered in the region. He began lessons on the tin whistle at age six and learned the accordion by age eight. He benefited from the tutelage of Tom Lynch, Connor McCarthy, and Martin Connolly. Irish Music Magazine has described him as prodigious and he was awarded “Best Accordion Player 2015” by the Irish Music Association. On top of his ferocious technique, leading him to be the band’s front man, he earned his Masters of Irish Traditional Music from the University of Limerick where he is highly regarded as a top musician.

Fiachra Hayes started playing the fiddle (along with many other instruments) at age three. Having also been born and raised in Ennis he was immersed in traditional Irish music and received instruction by Joan Hanrahan and Aisling Mulhern. He has participated and won many music competitions, including the prestigious “Ceol an Gheimhridh,” sharing that title with such renowned musicians as Martin Hayes, Paddy Canny, and Tara Breen. He just completed a teaching degree with music from Mary Immaculate College Limerick.

Socks in the Frying Pan was named the Irish Music Association’s “New Band of the Year” and continues to be embraced by Celtic music fans throughout the world. Having been booked by every major Irish festival and praised for their modern traditional style they are not to be missed.
